Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speechwriter. Feminist Frequency is a channel that hosts videos, commentaries and analysis of how popular culture depicts women. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational site for non-profit organizations that explores the representations of females in narratives from popular culture. In her efforts to break down stereotypes that are associated with women in pop media, she is also working on issues related the harassing women targeted by the media and different classes of individuals on the internet. Sarkeesian, who has a Master's in the field of Social and Political Thought at York University, is a well-known public speaking. She has spoken at TEDxWomen XOXO festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. Inquiring about gender identity and feminism from the age of 7, she started her site Feminist Frequency in the year 2009 when she was studying at the University. She had a plan to start an internet-based program that would examine the role of gender in games but was the target of an online harassment campaign. The attack did not stop her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her resolve as an activist for women in media. As a result of the many contributions she has made to feminist movements, she has been recognized with numerous awards.
